quote of the moment

"of course the people don't want war. but after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. that is easy. all you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger."

I wonder if we'll talk about Saddam's trial with the same reverence in 60 years.

i knew you'd jump on this one. (and no, it doesn't make you "predictable" -- it only means i love you for it.)

that's right, it's nürnberg during the war crimes trials ...

what i find interesting is this line of reasoning is precisely identical to what george bush has been using with the american public relative to iraq.

i'm not overtly political, but as a rough rule of thumb i think any time you're in strict agreement with nazi ideology, you need to re-examine yourself.

9/11 is being used as a excuse for a multitude of weird things being brought onto both the american public and the world at large, ranging from meals no longer being served on interstate flights, to wire tapping without warrant, to troop deployment (violating the exact same u.n. charter that iraq violated when invading kuwait -- and the reason the u.s. moved forces there the first time).

things won't stay this way forever, but i'm guessing that in 60 years what you see going down now will be talked about in the same hushed and confused tones as mccarthyism is today.

as always, thanks for your readership, thoughts and comments.
