If you asked me, Tookie's execution was his final, and most persuasive anti-gang gesture.

And by the way, a few childrens boks do not couterbalance a few shotgun murders.

Innocent my butt.

i can't say that i disagree with you -- the thing that bothers me is thedeath penalty in general ... before i lived in england, i was mildly in favor of it, but once i was in europe and saw how brutal they consider it to be there ("so let me get this right, you WANT to be on the same side as iraq, iran, saudi arabia, burma, north korea and russia?"), i flipped over on it.

the press didn't print arnold's full 5-page denial (of course, it doesn't fit well with the mtv attention-span of america), but it was well-written and on-the-mark.
the killings he was convicted of (and it was pretty clear to me that he DID do 'em), were brutal.

but even to have the debate and jump through all the endless appeal
hoops, just to kill someone; especially in an attempt to say "killing people is wrong," all seems so weird.

Ah- But what's missing from that list of countries is Singapore, where punishments are severe, death penalty is common, population is high, and crime is low.

And for that matter the middle east kicks our butt up and down the street in terms of violent crime.

I admit that disarming the population probably makes more sense as a deterent than the death penalty. But I do think it has a deterent value.
