purl77's comments are great. The only thing I would add is Stephen King's stories often deal with child-related nightmare situations. The reason he is so successful is because he takes these monster-under-the-bed fears and twists them to the nth degree.
The Shining is such a story. The POV in the book is strictly from the Danny's perspective and many of the scariest parts of the book are based on a kid's overactive, psychic imagination being used and twisted by the hotel (which is an entity in itself).
Other kid nightmare subjects King has used in the past are: the possibility of losing a parent, being terrorized by a clown, military toys turned deadly, buried pets (and people) come back to life, your beloved dog turned rabid, etc.
Good luck! I'm tempted to try it myself even if I'm not in the contest.
I realized this morning that my comment was probably moot because of the time difference. Oh well.
